How to Set Up a Solana Wallet: A Non-Technical Guide

You don't need to be a crypto person to start using crypto. Here's the simplest path in.

If you've never owned cryptocurrency, the first step is almost always the same: you need a wallet.

It's like a digital bank account, but one you fully own and control. No bank, no middleman, no application process. You set it up yourself, and from that moment on, anything you own on the blockchain lives there.

This guide walks you through setting up a Solana wallet from scratch. It's the same process used by millions of people, and it takes about ten minutes.

Step 1: Pick a wallet

For Solana, the two most popular wallets are Phantom and Solflare. Both are free, both are well-regarded, and both work on phones and desktop browsers.

If you're not sure which to pick, go with Phantom. It's the most widely used, has the cleanest interface for beginners, and is supported almost everywhere you'd want to use a Solana wallet.

You can download Phantom at phantom.com or find it in the App Store, Google Play, or as a Chrome browser extension.

Step 2: Create your wallet

Once Phantom is installed, open it and select "Create a new wallet."

You'll be asked to create a password. This password protects access to the wallet on your specific device. Make it strong and make sure you can remember it.

Then comes the part that matters most: your recovery phrase.

Step 3: Save your recovery phrase. Then save it again.

When you create a wallet, you'll be shown a sequence of twelve random words. This is called your recovery phrase, sometimes also called a seed phrase.

Step 4: Confirm your wallet is working

Once you've saved your recovery phrase, Phantom will ask you to confirm a few of the words to make sure you wrote them down correctly. Do this carefully.

After that, you're in. You'll see your wallet's main screen, which will show a balance of $0.00. That's normal. You haven't put anything in it yet.

You now have a Solana wallet!

Step 5: Get some SOL

To do anything on Solana, you'll need a small amount of SOL (the native Solana cryptocurrency) to cover network fees. These fees are very small, usually fractions of a cent, but you still need a bit of SOL in your wallet to make any transaction work.

A good starting amount is $10-20 in SOL. Solana network fees are tiny, usually fractions of a cent, so even a small amount goes a long way.

Step 6: You're ready
